New recycling collections

Once your new waste collections start, we will collect your recycling and rubbish on alternate weeks.

Rubbish will be collected one week and recycling the next week.

Households will get a 240 litre green-lid recycling bin for recycling collections.

Your recycling bin must have its lid fully closed when ready for collection, otherwise it may not be collected.

If you live in a flat, a property which shares communal bins, or we have assessed your property as unsuitable for wheelie bins, the waste containers you use for the new service may be different. If this applies to your property, we will write to you with details before the changes are due in your area.

What you and cannot put in your recycling bin

The same items which can currently go in your clear recycling sack can go in the recycling bin. Add items to the bin clean, dry and loose - please don't put plastic bags, sacks or liners in the bin.

Don't rely on the symbol on products as we cannot always recycle everything.

Plastic bottles

Before recycling plastic bottles, please check they are empty, squash them, and keep the lid on.

Yes please:

Any plastic bottles including plastic bottles used for drinks, toiletries and cleaning products

No thanks:

  • paint tins

Other items that cannot go in your recycling bin

  • crisps packets
  • tetrapaks and cartons used for food and drink - some of our community recycling banks accept these items
  • plastic sacks, bags and liners - please do not bag your recycling once using the new bins

You can recycle glass bottles and jars through your black box or communal bin or take it to a community recycling bank.

Some items you cannot recycle from home may be suitable for reuse, donation, or recycling somewhere else nearby:

When we will collect your recycling

Before your new waste collections are due, we will write to you confirming your collection days and start date.

Your collection days and times are likely to change but you will be notified.

If you need us to collect extra recycling

To encourage recycling, we will collect extra recycling if you need us to.

Soon, we will update our website with a new collection policy for the new waste service. This will include details on criteria for different size bins, and how and when we will collect extra recycling. Please check back soon for updates.

When we will collect more recyclable items

In the future, we're planning to recycle more items like extra plastics, foil, and cartons. Once more is known about plans for new recycling facilities in Hampshire, managed by Hampshire County Council, we will review when we can do this. We'll keep you updated.

What happens to your recycling

We collect your recycling and take it to a waste transfer station. It then goes to a recycling facility, known as a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). This facility is managed by Hampshire County Council.
