New Forest District Council supports National Tree Week

29 November 2023

We are continuing our work to reduce carbon emissions and support nature recovery by storing and maintaining young trees at a new site in Lyndhurst.

We can now collect and deliver the trees for planting on our land without travelling to a nursery, which reduces the carbon emissions caused by longer periods of transport.

Our Corporate Tree and Grounds Maintenance teams will also manage the watering schedule and maintain the condition of the young trees, which will result in longer life expectancy once they have been planted.

The planted trees will reduce carbon emissions and help the district in reaching net carbon zero by 2050. The trees will also help to prevent rainfall runoff, which will provide additional flood protection and help to regulate water flow across the district.

Councillor Geoffrey Blunden, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sustainability, said: "We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and contributing to the preservation and growth of our local green spaces. By storing young trees at our centralised site, we are continuing with our aims of reducing carbon emissions, protecting our district, and supporting local wildlife."

This move aligns with National Tree Week, which is taking place from 25 November to 3 December 2023 and marks the start of tree planting season. This year is the 50th anniversary of the first National Tree Week and the theme is "Plant a tree in 2023."
