New waste collection service begins soon for parts of the New Forest
20 May 2025
We will soon begin writing to households in New Milton, Brockenhurst, Lymington, and the surroundings areas with important information about our new waste collection service starting next month.
These residents are in the phase 1 area for the council's new waste and recycling service, which is being rolled out in 3 area phases, starting from 9 June 2025.
Each household in phase 1 will receive a letter tailored to their property, which will confirm their new collection day, and the date of the first collection under the new service.
The letters will also include a reminder about whether they will use wheelie bins, communal bins, or sacks, for new waste collections.
For residents using wheelie bins or using sacks, the letter will include a 12-month collection calendar to guide residents though the first year of their new collections.
A 'Go' leaflet will be included with each letter, explaining how to use the containers correctly and what materials go in each one.
Cllr Geoffrey Blunden, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Sustainability, said: "As a phase 1 resident, I was pleased to recently receive my wheelie bins and food waste recycling caddies, as part of our new waste collection service. The new bins and caddies will help me, and our residents, to recycle more, throw less away, and work together towards a more sustainable future for the district. I look forward to seeing the many benefits the new service will bring when it starts for phase 1 residents from the week of Monday 9 June 2025."
More information about the new waste service is available on our website.
From June, residents will be able to view their new collection day schedule on our website.
Notes to editors
As an appendix to the letter, phase 1 properties will receive a Section 46 Notice. The council are legally required to send this notice which outlines rules for managing waste in the district.
We are delivering wheelie bins and communal bins to phase 1 properties until 6 June. Households using wheelie bins will get a black-lidded 180 litre wheelie bin for rubbish and a green-lidded 240 litre recycling bin.
If residents are due to receive wheelie bins and they are not delivered by Friday 6 June 2025, they are asked to get in touch with us by emailing waste.changes@nfdc.gov.uk
For properties using communal bins, we will be delivering new communal bins before the collections start. As communal bins do not need to be put out for collection, properties using communal bins will not receive a collection calendar with their letters.
The collection calendar and leaflets, which are specific to phase 1 residents, will be available to download on our website shortly.
All properties will receive a 5 litre grey indoor food waste recycling caddy and 25 litre outdoor food waste recycling caddy.
Residents are reminded not to put out their new bins or food waste caddy before their new start date. Containers must be placed out by 6am on the day of collection, and ideally not before 6pm the evening before.
Glass will continue to be collected every four weeks from black boxes or communal glass bins. If there are any changes to glass collection days, we will be writing to residents to confirm this.
For residents subscribed to our garden waste collection service, their collection will continue on the same schedule.
