Information about new household waste collections in the New Forest
Friday 10 January 2025
Our new household waste collection service will be rolled out in three area phases starting this summer.
Households will get a black-lidded 180 litre wheelie bin for rubbish, and a green-lidded 240 litre recycling bin, along with an outdoor and an indoor caddy for the new food waste recycling service.
Residents can see demonstration general waste and recycling wheelie bins at our information offices in Lymington, Lyndhurst (Appletree Court), New Milton, and Ringwood.
When the new service starts, recycling and rubbish will be collected on alternate weeks. This means general waste will be collected one week, and recycling collected the next.
Food waste recycling will be collected every week. To get people started with food recycling, there will be one roll of caddy liners provided.
Glass collections will continue to be made every four weeks using the black glass collection box.
The new service will be introduced in 3 phases, with 3 different areas starting at different times.
The rollout will begin for phase one from June 2025, phase two will start in October 2025, and phase three in March 2026.
Residents in the first phase area starting in June will get a letter and leaflet from February, and in the next few weeks there will be a postcode checker on the council's website so all residents can check what phase they are in.
Information and leaflets being produced by us will include guidance on how to use bins and caddies, when they will be delivered, and any changes to collection days.
Cllr Geoffrey Blunden, portfolio holder for environment and sustainability, said: "Our new waste collection service will mean that we can recycle even more, separate food waste, and reduce what's thrown away, and it's an exciting step towards a more sustainable future for our district. By making it easier for households to recycle food waste and reduce what they throw away, we are not only helping our environment but also ensuring a more efficient and effective waste collection service for all. We're committed to supporting all residents during this transition and ensuring the new service works well for every household."
