Hypnotism authorisation

Under the Hypnotism Act 1952, if you wish to show, demonstrate, or perform a hypnotism act in public, you must have authorisation from the local authority where the act is to take place.

Exemptions

Under the Hypnotism Act 1952 you do not need authorisation from the local authority for an exhibition, demonstration, or performance of hypnotism for scientific or research purposes, the treatment of mental or physical disease, or  hypnotism that takes place during a performance of a play.

Who can apply

You may apply if you have not previously been refused or had authorisation withdrawn by any licensing authority, or been convicted of an offence under the Hypnotism Act 1952.

Conditions

The Hypnotism Act 1952 gives us powers to set conditions which regulate the public performance of an exhibition, demonstration or performance of hypnotism on a person.

Apply for hypnotism authorisation

The completed application form and required documents must be submitted at least 28 days before the performance (or first performance if there is a run).

You must submit a separate application for each proposed performance venue within our area.

To apply complete the Hypnotism authorisation application form (Word doc, 364 KB) and email it to licensing@nfdc.gov.uk, along with any required documents as detailed on the form.

We aim to process your application within 2 weeks from receiving it.

Fee

We do not charge a fee for Hypnotism authorisation.

Receiving hypnotism authorisation

Once your application form is processed, we will issue a letter of consent and a copy of the standard conditions.

You must comply with all the conditions.

Tacit consent

Tacit consent does not apply to Hypnotism.

It is in the public interest that we process your application before authorisation is given.
