Identifying pests and treatment fees

You will need to identify your pests with as much detail as possible when you book an appointment. Below you can find information on what to look for, and our fees for treatment of each type of pest.

Rats and mice

If you suspect you have rats or mice, your first course of action should be to remove accessible food within the problem area. Bird feeders and harbourage (rubbish or cracked pipes) are the main source of this problem. Other precautions include:

  • remove potential nesting spots by maintaining outside spaces
  • ensure drain covers are in place and kept in good repair
  • ensure you store your household waste in a covered bin

If you are aware of a vermin infestation on your land, you must report the occurrence for treatment. As carriers of many diseases, all landowners (including householders) have a legal responsibility to ensure their land is kept free from these vermin.

All councils have a statutory duty to control vermin and to make sure property owners understand and comply with their statutory obligation under the Prevention of Damage by Pests Act 1949.

If you have any concerns with areas that have been treated by us, call customer services on 023 8028 5000.

If rats are entering your property from a neighbouring property, or you have seen rats on a property, contact Environmental Health Protection by calling 023 8028 5411 or by email to eandr@nfdc.gov.uk.

Treatment fees: £180 for full treatment for domestic premises (initial visit plus up to three follow-up visits). This is reduced to £90.00 if you receive defined benefits.

Further treatment visits are charged at £50 per visit. This is reduced to £25.00 if you receive defined benefits.

The fees for commercial premises cannot be determined at time of booking, as it depends on the extent of your infestation. This will be assessed by the Pest Control Officer. There is a call-out advice charge of £180. Follow-up treatment will need to be booked and will incur the treatment charge, subject to quotation.

Wasps and hornets

Asian Hornets: We do not treat. You will need to report a sighting on the government app Asian Hornet Watch.

Ensure you have identified the location of the wasp or hornet nest before booking your treatment.

The service is for treating one nest on-site. Multiple nest treatment will incur an additional charge.

The nest may not be treated if it is not adequately accessible. Treatment is dependent upon the accessibility and location of the nest, which may only be determined by a Pest Control Officer.

Treatment fees: £105 for full treatment of one nest on-site. There is a charge of £30 per 15 minutes for each additional nest while on-site.

Fleas

If a flea infestation was generated from your household pet, they too must be treated for fleas. Contact your vet for advice as to the best form of treatment.

Special attention should be paid to your pet's bedding, which should be regularly washed in hot water and detergent.

Prior to the pest control treatment, you are advised to thoroughly vacuum your entire house.

  • pay attention to areas where your pets have access, including furnishings, clothing and around floor edges
  • concrete, tiled floors and bare floorboards can all harbour infestations especially between cracks and crevices, and should be thoroughly cleaned
  • empty your vacuum cleaner after each use, otherwise the fleas will find their way back into your property

All unwrapped food and toys need to be put away prior to treatment.

Treatment fees: £130 for full treatment during one visit (30 minutes). There is a charge of £30 per 15 minutes or part thereof to complete treatment.

Bedbugs

The most common sign of infestation are bites. Other signs are if you have tiny specks of blood on your bedding.

Treating bedbugs effectively is difficult and will usually require more than one visit.

Upon booking, you will be advised on what to do to prepare for the treatment. This will include removing all bedding and soft furnishings, which must be washed and bagged. Divan bed bases will host bedbugs and may need dismantling to treat.

Treating bed bugs will require an on-site survey to gauge the extent of the infestation. Follow-up treatment will need to be booked and will incur the treatment charge, subject to quotation.

Treatment fees: £100 for initial survey and quotation. Follow-up treatments depend on the extent of your infestation.

Carpet moths and carpet beetles

Carpet moths and carpet beetles feed on carpet weave, causing bare patches. These are usually found when moving furniture that has been in place for some time.

During treatment we will need to move furniture, so you should remove any breakable or heavy items.

Treatment fees: £130 for full treatment during one visit (30 minutes). There is a charge of £30 per 15 minutes or part thereof to complete treatment.
