New Forest District Council prosecute Council Tax Support and Housing Benefit fraud

22 April 2025

We have, together with the Department for Work and Pensions, achieved a successful prosecution for thousands of pounds of Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support fraud at Portsmouth Magistrates' Court on 20 March 2025.

The New Forest resident pleaded guilty to fraud amounting to over £15,000 in Housing Benefit and Council Tax by not declaring their earnings.

As well as paying back the overpayment of Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support, the resident was sentenced to a 12 month Community Order, which includes 100 hours of unpaid work and court costs.

Cllr Jeremy Heron, Portfolio Holder for Finance and Corporate Services, said: "We have a duty to protect public funds and recognise the various forms of fraud that can threaten this responsibility. As part of our commitment to safeguarding public resources, we are proactive in identifying and prosecuting benefit fraud.

We are committed to tackling fraud and will not tolerate these acts in the administration of our responsibilities. By maintaining a vigilant stance, we ensure that public funds are used appropriately and that those who attempt to exploit the system are held accountable."
