Priorities set out to support residents experiencing domestic abuse

2 April 2025

We have launched our Domestic Abuse Strategy covering 2025 to 2028.

The report for the strategy was presented at Cabinet meeting on 2 April.

Commitments in the strategy include bespoke training for our staff, safe accommodation and support for those experiencing domestic abuse, and ensuring there are clear pathways for accessing specialist domestic abuse support services.

In the New Forest, the Hampshire Domestic Abuse Partnership estimates that from 2023 to 2024, just over 7,000 people were subjected to domestic abuse.

Councillor Dan Poole, portfolio holder for Community, Safety and Wellbeing said:

"We recognise the continued high prevalence of domestic abuse, acknowledging underreporting and the devastating impact it has on individuals, their families, communities, and wider society. Our new domestic abuse strategy and plans to help align with the priorities in our Corporate Plan, including our priority to help people in the greatest need."

"Our training for staff will help to enhance early identification and responses to domestic abuse. Some departments across the council will have a domestic abuse champion embedded within their service. Our goal is to create balanced, resilient, and healthy communities where people feel safe and supported with easy access to services."

We emphasise our commitment to addressing domestic abuse through a comprehensive, multi-agency approach which includes working with Stop Domestic Abuse, The Hampton Trust, Hampshire County Council, and New Forest Domestic Abuse Forum.
