Who will be affected by climate change

There are some residents who may be more vulnerable to the effects of climate change or who may find it harder to adapt, this includes:

  • older people (those aged 65+, especially those aged 75+), are more physically sensitive to the climate and may find it harder to regulate their temperature during extreme. They may also find it harder to respond and adapt to a weather event due to poor health or low mobility
  • under 5s are less able to regulate their own temperature during periods of high heat and are reliant on care givers to support them to adapt to changes or hazards
  • people with health conditions, both physical and mental, ma find it hard to adapt, prepare or respond to changing climates and extreme weather events. They may experience their access to healthcare, carers or medication be restricted
  • people on low incomes may have less financial means by which to prepare, respond and recover from changing climate and/or extreme weather events
  • tenants in private or social housing may be reliant on their landlords to make necessary adaptations to their property
  • people who are socially isolated may struggle to connect with support networks and may be unknown to services, so they may not be identified in cases of emergencies
  • people with low personal mobility may not be able to respond quickly during an extreme weather event. They may be reliant on caregivers or a support network and there ability to access necessary services, support or equipment may be affected by climate change or weather events
