Beach shelters improved in the New Forest
17 February 2025
We have completed renovation works to beachfront shelters in the district.
We have improved 8 beach shelters along the coast along Barton Cliff, Hordle Cliff, and Milford on Sea at Milford Promenade. These enhancements include vital structural repairs, the installation of improved and inclusive seating, accessibility features, and refreshed designs aimed at improving the overall visitor experience.
Cllr Geoffrey Blunden, portfolio holder for environment and sustainability, said: "These beach shelters are not just structures; they are important spaces in our community that offer residents and visitors a place to relax and enjoy our beautiful coastline. By upgrading them, we're making sure they remain safe, welcoming, and accessible for everyone.
The beach shelters also ensure that we are continuing to support our local businesses, particularly local catering outlets, as these shelters provide cover in changeable weather conditions across the seafront. This project reflects our ongoing commitment to improving public spaces for both residents and visitors, ensuring these much-loved spaces continue to serve our community for many years to come."
Local Information boards are being added to each beach shelter, as part of an additional phase of the renovation works. The boards will feature details about the geology, history, and community of each location, as well as informing visitors about nearby facilities. These works are due to be completed later in the year.
Before the renovation works took place, we encouraged residents to give their views about the beachfront facilities by completing a short online survey. We received 722 responses, which helped to inform us about what improvements would most benefit the community.
Residents are now invited to give additional feedback by completing the our current survey, which will help us to continue to both improve and maintain the facilities.
The survey is available on our website: https://newforest.gov.uk/beachfrontsurvey
