Westover, Milford-on-Sea urgent coast protection works

This autumn a rock structure is being constructed to protect the failing section of seawall, just west of the White House at Westover, Milford-on-Sea. We have created an online diary to keep you up-to-date with the progress of the works.

Why we need to do this

Severe weather caused damage to a large section of the seawall and has meant that we need to urgently protect this section.

What we are doing to protect the seawall

We are splitting up this work into 2 phases.

Phase 1

We are using 9,000 tonnes of Larvik rock to protect 180 metres of seawall, just west of the White House.

Phase 2

After we have completed phase 1 we will need to look to complete the required protection to the rest of the seawall.

We will need to review this after phase 1 and will update this webpage with further details when we have them.

How long it will take

The rock will arrive on a barge in September 2020 and construction will take around 14 weeks (depending on the weather and tides).

The area around the construction activities will be closed off with clear signage of areas to avoid.

If you want to have a look at what we are doing then please head to the eastern end of the seawall, beside the White House.

How much it will cost

The cost of phase 1 is £1.5 million. We hope to recover most of this money from central government funding.

Who we are working with

We have contracted Earlcoate to undertake this work.
