Historic parks and gardens
Nationally significant parks and gardens are identified by English Heritage and included in a national register. They vary from large, planned historic parkland, public parks and designed civic spaces and small private gardens that may have been designed by renowned landscape gardeners.
There is currently only one historic park and garden (Breamore) on the national register in New Forest District. However, a significant number of these assets have been identified as locally important. These are held on the Hampshire Register which is maintained on behalf of the county by the Hampshire Gardens Trust.

Scheduled monuments
These are nationally important archaeologically significant sites and monuments that are given legal protection by being placed on a list known as a "Schedule". Once on the Schedule, consent (Scheduled Monument Consent) is needed before any works that would affect the monument may be carried out. It is a criminal offence to disturb a scheduled monument or undertake unlicensed metal detecting.
Scheduled monuments are not always ancient or indeed visible above ground. There are over 200 "classes" of monument on the Schedule ranging from pre-historic standing stones, earthworks and burial mounds through the many types of medieval site - castles, monasteries, abandoned farmsteads and villages - to the more recent results of human activity, such as collieries and wartime pillboxes.
The features are often significant but they are also finite, irreplaceable, fragile and vulnerable to both human activity and natural processes. They are a valuable resource in the understanding of our past providing a unique insight into the activities of our ancestors and how they shaped and responded to environment.
There are numerous Scheduled Monuments throughout New Forest District. We currently seek archaeological advice from Hampshire County Council who maintain the county Sites and Monuments record (SAM) where the Schedule can be accessed.
