Coronavirus: Travel and transport

This section aims to provide you with information on how to travel safely and what transport options there are available locally.

The main advice is to stay home as much as possible but if you do need to travel or use public transport please read the information on this page

For work: The government is advising that you should continue to work from home if you can but, if this is not possible, consider cycling, walking or driving before using public transport.

For leisure: Under new guidelines, residents of England are now able to travel anywhere within the country to spend time outdoors. You should still carefully consider if your journey is necessary and continue to spend time outside locally where possible.

Public transport

If you do have to use public transport, the government guidance recommends you:

• keep 2 metres apart from others

• wear a face covering - mandatory on public transport from 15 June *

• use contactless payment where possible

• avoid rush hour travel where feasible

• wash or sanitise your hands as soon as possible before and after travel

• follow advice from staff and be considerate to others

*Face coverings are different from medical face masks, which should be reserved for front line medical staff to use whilst working. Children under the age of 2 should not wear face coverings.

Passenger guidance

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavirus-covid-19-safer-travel-guidance-for-passengers

The travel guidance recognises that there will be times and some settings on public transport where social distancing is not possible. It outlines how people should minimise the duration of this, and take all necessary steps to observe these measures where possible.
