New 'Healthy Walk' added in New Milton

A New Forest District Council funded project welcomed local people who took part in the latest 'Healthy Walk' to be added to the scheme, at Ballard Lakes in New Milton when it launched on Monday 20 May.

The walks are  run by Community First New Forest on behalf of the district council and supported by the New Forest National Park.

The Ballard Lakes walk uses the new Greenway accessible path opened in March as part of our strategy to improve local walking routes.

The walk intends to be a regular weekly walk, from Ballard Lakes at 10.30 every Monday and one walk a month will be for those with additional needs, including those with dementia, learning disabilities or mobility issues.

Jamie Burton, our Health and Partnerships Manager said, "All the Healthy Walks are free to take part in and are led by trained volunteers who help to map the route and welcome the participants.

"Being physically active is proven to be good for physical and mental health. Simply going for a daily walk is good for you and having a group to go with can help to reduce issues like social isolation. We want more people to enjoy a longer life in good health and the wonderful facilities in the district. The Healthy Walks programme is a great way to stay healthy and meet people. There are walks all over the district so you can find a local one or join in others. And if you want to become a leader and help others then Community First New Forest can help to you get started."

The Healthy Walks programme was set up by us to give more people the opportunity to be active in a social group and is aimed at those who are less confident in walking very far or on their own. In partnership with New Milton Town Council, we have been working together to get local residents more active.
