Walkers celebrate new accessible trails in Lymington

Greenways footpath Local walkers and their canine companions are celebrating the opening of a new easy access trail at Alexandra Road, Lymington, after we made improvements to three well-used public rights of way.   The three routes, linking Lymington and Pennington, have been enhanced to improve accessibility, with new surfacing, new route signage, and accessible kissing gates replacing old barriers.

The £70,000 improvement scheme was part of our Greenway project to improve recreational walking routes across the district. The Greenway project is funded by contributions paid by developers as part of any new residential development. Hampshire County Council contributed £10,000 to the Lymington improvements and their countryside team managed the works.

Cllr Edward Heron, portfolio holder for Planning and Infrastructure and Hampshire County Council's executive member for Countryside and Rural Affairs, cut the ribbon at an official opening ceremony on Thursday 6 September. He said:

"The idea behind these enhanced walking routes being developed through New Forest District Council's Greenway scheme is to help encourage residents, particularly dog walkers, to use these walking routes, thereby reducing the number of visits that might otherwise be made to the most sensitive areas of the New Forest National Park. I hope people and their pets will greatly enjoy using them.

"Hampshire County Council's access team works hard across the county to ensure as many people as possible can access the countryside, maintaining and improving the network of paths that is so much valued by all our communities. By working collaboratively with district councils and other partners, the team can quickly identify specific local needs. By improving surfaces, bridges and gateways on the paths very close to people's homes, we can make a real difference to people's daily lives, and encourage them to spend more regular time enjoying the countryside."
