Councillor digs in for new homes for local people

New Forest District Council's portfolio holder for housing and communities, Councillor Jill Cleary, got stuck in at the start of works to build 35 new council homes for local people

Cllr Jill Cleary Compton & Sarum House "I'm very happy to be witnessing the start of another project by the council addressing the need for affordable homes" she said."Tenants have recently moved into new council homes in New Milton and by the end of 2018 tenants will be settling into much-needed new homes here in Totton. We are investing our housing revenue in new homes, adding to our housing stock and making use of land we already own."

A ground-breaking ceremony was held on the site where nine two bedroom and 26 one bedroom homes are being built on land already owned by the council at Blackwater Drive. The flats will be built in two blocks in the grounds of existing council homes in Compton House and Sarum House. 76 car parking spaces, attractive landscaping designed to provide informal play opportunities for young children, and new bike and bin stores are also included in the project.

Councillor Cleary, along with Councillor Neville Penman and Councillor Arthur Davies, district and town councillors for Totton, were shown the start of the works by Craig Durman, head of housing for the main contractor Brymor Construction Ltd. Mr Durman said:

"It is a pleasure to work alongside New Forest District Council on their largest new development of council housing in recent years. The design of the new accommodation maximises the available land whilst enhancing the surrounding area for the existing community.  We very much look forward to delivering high-quality units and continuing our working relationship with New Forest District Council."

The project is being fully-funded by the council and is the largest new build project the council has embarked on in around 25 years. The build is expected to be complete by late 2018.

The new homes will be built to high environmental standards, offering energy efficiency and ensuring that tenants will benefit from reduced energy bills. When complete the new homes will be offered to residents on the council's Homesearch register.

Regular updates will be available at at as well as a dedicated Facebook page updated by Brymor Construction Ltd during the build.
