Independent Remuneration Panel - Councillors' Allowances

Do you have an interest in local government?

Do you understand how Councils work and the role of Councillors?

Would you like to advise New Forest District Council on the financial allowances paid to elected Councillors?

The Council has by law to appoint an Independent Remuneration Panel to advise on the allowances Councillors should receive. New Forest District Council intends to appoint a fresh Panel of three members to examine the current Members' Allowances Scheme and to make recommendations to the Council on appropriate levels of allowances for the future.

If you would like to serve on the Panel you will need to -

  • have a basic knowledge of the way local government works and/or of local rates of pay for a range of jobs related to administration or the public service;
  • have a knowledge of the area. Panel members should live or work within the District Council's area, or to be able to demonstrate strong links with the Council through partnership or other working arrangements;
  • be able to reach impartial and fact-based conclusions

In addition to the above, the Council is seeking at least one Panel member with expert knowledge of allowances schemes, and who has previously served on a similar Panel either at NFDC or elsewhere.

The Panel will probably meet over a period of two days on 9 and 10 October 2017. Members will receive payment for their services, dependent on qualifications and experience, at a rate to be agreed.

If you would like further information, please phone Rosemary Rutins on 023 8028 5588 or email her at Please note that District, Parish and County Councillors may not serve on the Panel.

Applicants are asked to write giving an outline of their qualifications, experience and suitability for the role. The closing date for applications is Friday, 14 July 2017. Short-listed applicants will be interviewed in July 2017.
